[ Sue (Sujo) Tryk ] Sue grew up at Dorena Lake in an art oriented home as the daughter of Tod and Helen (professional artist/sculptress) Tryk. Although she dabbled in art and worked in clay since she was a child and attended the University of Oregon in the late 50's as a Special Art Student, she didn't begin seriously painting and marketing her work until she was living in Charleston, South Carolina and her children were in school. At this time, in the 1960's, Sue focused on florals and the many historical homes and buildings in that area. While in Charleston, she was a member of the La Petit Louvre, a cooperative Art Gallery located on a cobblestone street in the historic part of town, the Charleston Art Guild, and participated in the guild's many sidewalk art shows. She also exhibited, taught, and was the Art Exhibit Chairman for the Charleston Air Force Base Officer's Club.

The family moved to Safety Harbor, Florida in the early 70's where Sue belonged to the Safety Harbor Art Guild and was a part of a 3-member art gallery co-op in Tarpon Springs, a colorful Greek town north of Clearwater. Here she sold her paintings and pottery while demonstrating wheel thrown pottery on the docks where the Greeks had tourist excursions in their sponge boats. Later, while living in Key West, Florida, she was a member of the Key West Art Guild and sold paintings, through their Gallery. This was a fun time as she was able to do a lot of "on scene" painting of the colorful Key West historic buildings with other artist friends and also participated in local sidewalk shows.

Workshops

In the mid '70's, Sue moved back to her home town of Cottage Grove and, as a single parent, raised her children. Even while working full time, Sue supplemented her salary with sales from paintings and pottery. Some of her favorite workshops have been from artists Marshall Joyce (watercolor), Tom Browning (oil), and Jan Kunz (watercolor), Michael Gibbons (oil).

Her favorite medias are: oil, acrylic, watercolor, pen and ink, colored tissue paper, wheel and hand built pottery (stoneware), stained glass (mirrors, small windows, ornaments), fused stain and dichroic glass (jewelry). Subjects include local covered bridges, historic buildings, landscapes, local scenes, and flowers. She is available for commissioned works.

Exhibitions

Locally, Sue has shown at: Bearly Country Gallery on Gateway Blvd. and the Hotel Gifts & Gallery (owned by Sujo) in the historic Cottage Grove Hotel. She also participated in many local sidewalk art shows and demonstrated pottery throwing at several Downtown Festivals. She has maintained a home based off/shop/mini gallery since the 80's located on North 9th Street from which she has since retired and is now able to devote full time to her work.

Exhibits include:

  • Main Street Art Gallery (pottery)
  • Books on Main (prints and cards)
  • Britz Jewelers ( paintings and painted wine goblets)
  • Rose Garden Mall (stained glass windows)
  • Bookmine (cards and fused glass jewelry)
  • Village Green Resort Motel (prints and ceramic covered bridge wall plaques)
  • Cottage Grove Community Hospital (paintings)

Also shows with the art guild at the Village Green Growers Festival and Saturday Growers Market.
