[ Jean Makinson ] Jean remembers loving art since the age of 6. She took art classes in grade and high school, specializing in watercolors. She sold her first watercolor of a German Shepherd at age 14. Jean prefers to work in oil and acrylics and enjoys painting animals, both wild and domesticated. She also enjoys landscapes and florals which she manages to incorporate in her animal paintings.

Jean works on canvas as well as various sizes of slate. Her paintings on slate have been very popular and she paints mostly animals on them. She also does commissioned works, mostly of clients' pets, from dogs and cats to horses.

Before Jean and her husband, Lee, moved to the Cottage Grove area, she owned and operated fabric stores in Fairbanks, Alaksa, Renton, Washington, and Eugene, Oregon. During this period, she also taught fabric and shirt painting to weekly classes. She was also hired by the Delta-Shiva paint company to do fabric art demonstrations at their various shows throughout the United States.

Workshops

Workshops have included Peggy Caldwell in Acrylics, Jean animals in oils; Doris Preieto in oils; and locally, Bob Niems in oils.

Shows and Exhibits

Jean has shown at the Oakway Mall in Eugene, the Cottage Grove Art Guild's Main Street Art Gallery, Art Gallery at the Community Center.

Jean, along with husband, a woodworker, displays at many shows and crafters markets throughout the area including the Village Green Growers Market, both the Eugene and Cottage Grove Homeshows, Roseburg Craft Show, Cottage Grove Growers Market, etc.
